Item #1: Mount Fuji

Three months ago, during a late-night study session, Elena wrote a list on a napkin. The title said: Things to do in Japan before we go home. She wrote twenty items. Some were serious. Some were silly. Item one, in big capital letters, underlined twice, said: Climb Mount Fuji.

Now, they were standing at the Fuji Fifth Station. It was four o'clock in the afternoon. Below them, a thin line of cloud moved slowly. That napkin from three months ago felt like a very long time ago.

"We're already above the clouds," Priya said. She sounded a little out of breath, even though they hadn't started climbing yet. The bus ride alone had taken them up to 2,300 meters.

Marco checked his backpack one more time. Headlamp. Extra layers of clothing. Water. A small bag of rice crackers that Yui had insisted everyone should carry, just in case.

"Everyone ready?" he asked.

"Ready is a strong word," Elena said. But she was already walking toward the trail.

People can only climb Mount Fuji during two months of the year — July and August. The group had chosen a Friday night on purpose. Their plan was to climb through the whole night and reach the top in time for sunrise. Yui called this goraiko: watching the sun rise from the top of Japan's highest mountain. She said it was one of the most beautiful things they would ever see.

First, though, they had to actually get there. And from where they stood now, at the very beginning, the summit looked impossibly far away.

Three hours later, at the seventh station, nobody was talking very much anymore.

It wasn't because anyone was upset. It was simply because talking used energy, and none of them had much energy left to spare. The air felt noticeably thinner here. Even walking slowly and carefully made their lungs work harder than usual.

Priya was struggling more than the others. She had gone quiet almost an hour earlier. Her steps had slowed down. Her breathing sounded a little strange, a little unsteady.

"Are you okay?" Marco asked, slowing down to walk beside her.

"I have a headache," she admitted. "And I feel a bit sick. Is that normal?"

"That's altitude sickness," Yui said, checking her guidebook by the light of her headlamp. "It happens to some people more than others, especially when you climb quickly. We should slow down and drink more water. If it gets worse, we go back down the mountain. No arguing about that."

Priya nodded. She was too tired to argue anyway.

All around them, dozens of other climbers moved slowly up the same dark trail. Their headlamps created a long, winding line of small lights up the mountainside, like a river flowing upward instead of down. Far below, the lights of Fujiyoshida town looked tiny now, impossibly far away already.

They kept climbing, more slowly this time, stopping every twenty minutes to drink water and catch their breath.

At the ninth station, just after two in the morning, they stopped completely.

Priya felt a little better after slowing down, but real exhaustion had settled into all four of them now — deep, heavy tiredness that made every step feel twice as hard. The final stretch to the summit rose steeply above them in the darkness. It was a rocky, uneven path, and honestly, right now, four warm sleeping bags somewhere far below sounded much more appealing than more climbing.

"We're behind schedule," Yui said, checking her watch against the times written in her guidebook. "If we don't start moving again soon, we might actually miss it."

"Miss what?" Marco asked, only half joking at this point.

"Sunrise. The entire reason we agreed to do this to ourselves."

Elena sat down heavily on a rock, breathing hard. "I genuinely cannot feel my toes anymore."

For a moment, nobody moved. The wind had picked up, cold and sharp at this altitude, and the summit still looked impossibly far away in the darkness above them.

"We wrote it on the list," Priya said quietly, breaking the silence. "Item one. In capital letters. Underlined twice, remember?"

Elena let out a short, tired laugh — more exhaustion than real amusement — but she was already pushing herself back up onto her feet, brushing off her gloves.

They reached the summit at exactly 4:42 in the morning — eighteen minutes before sunrise, according to Yui's very careful calculations — with almost no energy left between the four of them.

They found a spot along the edge of the crater, wrapped themselves in every layer of clothing they had brought, and waited together in a silence that felt completely different now. Not exhausted silence anymore. Something closer to quiet excitement.

The sky began to change slowly at first. A deep blue softened near the horizon. Then it changed faster — gold and pink spreading upward — until the sun itself finally broke free of the horizon in one bright, sudden line of light.

For a long moment, nobody spoke at all.

Below them, clouds stretched out in every direction like a white ocean, catching the early light in a way none of them had ever seen before, not even from an airplane window. The whole difficult climb — the thin air, Priya's headache, the freezing cold, the doubt back at the ninth station — quietly folded into something that felt, from all the way up here, completely worth it.

"Okay," Elena finally said, pulling out her phone with stiff, cold fingers to take a photo that she already knew would never fully capture this moment. "Item one, officially complete."

"So, what's item two?" Marco asked, grinning despite everything.

Yui was already smiling back at him. "I actually have a few ideas."

Far below them, the sun kept rising steadily, completely indifferent to their little list — exactly on schedule, exactly as it always was.
